J. Cole
J. Cole is the stage name of Jermaine Lamarr Cole, a rapper and producer born in 1985 on a US military base in Frankfurt and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Jay-Z signed him to Roc Nation in 2009, and all seven of his studio albums, from Cole World: The Sideline Story (2011) to The Fall-Off (2026), a double album presented as his last, have reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In April 2024 he apologized on stage at his annual Dreamville Festival for “7 Minute Drill”, a response to Kendrick Lamar on his mixtape Might Delete Later, and had it pulled from streaming services.

J. Cole wrote much of KOD on holiday, with no guest but a pitched-down alter ego. Its most praised songs share its flaws, and most of the rest runs flat.
