You know Efrim Manuel Menuck best for raising hell with Godspeed You! Black Emperor. But he’s just as capable of doing it on his own. Pissing Stars marks his second solo release, and the only way it could be any cooler is if he named it Shitting Galaxies. Listening to this album can put you in a meditative state. Its ambient sounds and odd, whirring textures won’t jar you as much as they lull you. However, you never find yourself on the verge of drifting into a dream. Rather, you’re wide-eyed but gazing into this vast galaxy. I suppose you could have a similar experience with Menuck’s work in GY!BE, but there’s something more inviting about Pissing Stars‘ songs.

Perhaps, it’s that Menuck lends them a human quality with his voice. And he sounds pretty good! All while singing lyrics that are undoubtedly deep. Obviously, some of them deal with the current political climate. However, they could easily pertain to any situation where someone is feeling the crush of everyday life. Lovers of long songs will satiate their hunger with this release. Pissing Stars opens with an absolute, colossal masterpiece, “Black Flags Ov Thee Holy Sonne”, yet meets its rival several times with perhaps “LxOxVx/Shelter In Place” as the second best song. However, those are mere pieces of a well-crafted sonic journey.
