“Fuck you!/ I’m still alive,” is the chorus to the opening song on The Spook School‘s new album, Could It Be Different?. It’s a defiant declaration directed toward an abusive lover. However, all listeners can get behind the sentiment, especially those with an oppressive, destructive force in their lives. It’s a quality many of the songs share on Could It Be Different?. The new Spook School album is nostalgic, painful, catchy, and triumphant.

The band has been a champion of the LGBT community with its past two albums and Could It Be Different? is no exception. Many of the songs deal with singer/guitarist Nye Todd embracing his trans identity. But while some songs are undoubtedly heartbreaking, they leave a light at the end of the tunnel. By the time the album comes to a close, it seems like Todd has found that light. But some listeners likely see it as well.
