Spinning Coin is a five-piece from Glasgow, Scotland. But rather than one band, it feels like you’re getting two on their debut Permo. The band’s two songwriters Sean Armstrong and Jack Mellin take turns on lead, and each has a distinct style. So, you get an interesting contrast between Spinning Coin’s two writers. However, it unwinds the album like a ball of string, never allowing it to feel like a cohesive whole. Rather, it feels like a collaborative album between two songwriters sharing the same backing band. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially when Sean Armstrong and Jack Mellin are both strong writers. However, Mellin brings the momentum with his rock-oriented songs while Armstrong’s are light on energy but heavy on emotion. Really, it depends on the listeners as to which version of Spinning Coin they prefer.
