A side project dressed up as a new album? Sure, why not.

The Saga Continues is a side project by affiliates of the Wu-Tang Clan. We get the hint in that the album is by Wu-Tang and not the Wu-Tang Clan. It’s a notion that’s kind of unnecessary. Only one album is credited to the Wu-Tang Clan released to mass market in the past twenty years that hasn’t registered as some kind of side project. And that was the one that was all about being sad because ODB died. This, in other words, is basically a new Wu-Tang Clan album in all but name and priorities.

So, fine. Producer Mathematics does a fine pastiche of RZA’s signature sound, everyone does a fine job of acting tough and throwing in enough references to let you know the music was made recently (Sean Price’s posthumous work excepted), and the pacing is fine enough that the odd outright bad guest verse never stinks up the joint too hard. The Saga Continues is fine enough to be on par with about half of the group’s proper albums, and I’m fine with that, basically, mostly.
