A better Twin Shadow album than the latest Twin Shadow album.Barsuk, 2015

HIBOU’s self-titled album is bedroom pop as made to sound like what people were dancing to in the ’80s as imagined by folks who wants something to shake their ass to. It is a bit too pleased with itself, and the dedication to bouncy synths might get tiresome to some when the second half kicks in, but if you were infatuated with Twin Shadow’s ’80s infatuated sound on Confess, you should give HIBOU a chance. It is leagues better than Eclipse, and while it is an emotionally one-dimensional album, it hits its one emotion pretty damn hard. Music needn’t always be deep—fun is still “a thing”.
