Don't Blow Your Cover: Walk Off The Earth - "Somebody I Used To Know" (Gotye Cover)


'Don't Blow Your Cover' lets you determine whether a band breathes new life into an older, established song.

In this edition, Ontario based indie band Walk Off The Earth doesn't breathe life into an older, established song.  Instead they reinvent a song by another modern artist, Gotye.



The Original - "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye (2011)



Fun Facts:

  • Despite being relatively unknown in the US, Gotye, real name Wouter "Wally" De Backer, is successful in his home country of Melbourne, Australia. Born in 1980, Gotye has released three albums since 2003, and he's won five ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Awards.


  • "Somebody That I Used To Know" is Gotye's first international hit, racking up many accolades that include: #1 in the ARIA Singles Chart, the ARIA Digital Singles Chart, and the ARIA Australian Artists Chart. The song charted in the top 20 in over 10 countries with 6 of them being at number one, the song also charted in the US and Canada.


  • The song appears on Gotye's third album, Making Mirrors,certified two times platinum by the ARIA Albums Chart, making it the most successful Australian album of 2011. Much of this was due to the popularity of "Somebody That I Used To Know".

    Walk Off The Earth's cover of "Somebody That I Used To Know" has gone viral on YouTube, surpassing 56 MILLION views. The band was asked to perform the cover on The Ellen Degeneres Show recently. Watch the five-member band bring the song to life below.
