Blondes - Blondes Review

A spontaneous combustion of fiery trance music.

Blondes - Blondes (2012) – 6.0 / 10.0
RVNG Intl.

Blondes is the duo of Zach Steinman and Sam Haar, not to be confused with another indie duo known as Blonds (no 'e' at the end). While Blonds make straight indie pop music, Blondes are an indie electronic act. But before you start thinking of two guys sitting behind computers, toiling away at countless loops, you should know that Blondes are a completely organic project, favoring improvisation. Because they record in just one take, I'm not sure if the duo knows what their game plan is going into their songs as they progressively build them into multi-layered sonic architectures. Inspiration at the spur of the moment is the most interesting aspect of Blondes. On "Lover", I imagined the duo said, "What the hell, let's add some chants", even though the song could do without them.

The album's best moments come on the tracks "Business" and "Wine". Where "Wine" is refreshing and chill, "Business" is a dazzling display of the duo's capabilities. When the song reaches its deepest level, it means business. Blondes choose to name their songs in the most generic one word titles -- "Lover", "Hater", "Pleasure" -- that don't really seem inspired by the creativity behind them. However, why are instrumental compositions titled anyway? Blondes love to jam; no track is under six minutes. The album also comes with a bonus of sorts in the form of a remix album of the main album's eight tracks. I only suggest checking it out for those that are diehard fans of the genre, but it's a nice addition for your money's worth. The real selling point though is the original album, a spontaneous combustion of fiery trance music.
