Alternative Metal group Liturgy has released a new record that is, as best I can tell, part-Deathklok, part-barbershop quartet. I have no idea what is going on here

Your Guess Is As Good As Mine...The Last One?
I must be getting older, because Metal has become a genre that thoroughly baffles me. Liturgy is a band of the Black Metal variety. A distinction, that as best as I can tell, means you have no idea what is happening in the song, but it sure is loud. The band has been kicking around the typically-weenie poet center of Brooklyn for most of the last decade. Aesthethica is Liturgy's sixth LP and their first release as part of the impressively random stable at Thrill Jockey. What appears to set this album apart from others in the genre is the presence of A Capella interludes. Think something along the lines of what you would expect from a Sparks record and you'll be in the ballpark. Though these musings are very nice, they aren't exactly integrated into the rest of the record. The result is a group of intermissions that seem about as important as skits do on a Hip-Hop album; amusing but little else. The meat of Aesthethica is a fairly standard apocalyptic Metal outing. Demonically delivered lyrics over screeching guitar work and massive drum cacophony. There isn't much in terms of melody or what I would call songcraft. Metal fans will most likely rejoice, but the old man in me needed a nap at the end of this journey. Where's my BC headache powder?
